Can you feel it?

You may have noticed that my blogs and tweets have been a bit thin on the ground lately. That's mostly because Caroline, Chloe and I are currently burning the midnight oil studying for a Colour Psychology accreditation with the UK's leading colour psychologist Bernay Laity of in:colour. I'm going to share a lot of the findings with you over the next few weeks because the course has been absolutely fascinating. It's revolutionised the way we work with colour in lots of ways, and reassuringly, in other ways it has reinforced a lot of what we've been doing over the past four years.

Something that has just blown me away about colour, and I'd like to share with you, is that colour has a physical effect on our bodies.

We all accept that colour has a psychological effect. We can dress in a certain colour to enhance or reflect our mood. And it's widely recognised that if we wear a sunny yellow for example, we'll be projecting confidence, or that people who wear red are sometimes seen as aggressive. But did you know that you can actually feel colour?

Just to test this theory, Bernay did an experiment with us where she asked us to close our eyes and put our hands above the table. She then scrunched up some silk scarves and put one under each hand. We had to just relax and say how we felt, and it was extraordinary! Some colours thumped their way up our arms and into our shoulders, others gently tingled in our fingers.

The fact is that we all feel colour at a subconscious level. This experiment was about showing us how we feel colour on a conscious level, so that we can use colour to influence buying behaviour. Fascinating stuff!
