Chrissie Slade creates natural aromatherapy skincare products for guinea pigs. And she is utterly fabulous and very passionate about her niche.

Chrissie is the only person in the world (that we know of at least) to do this so she really has carved out a powerful niche for herself! She sells grooming products for guinea pigs with skincare problems all over the world and is an expert on her subject. We first met Chrissie when she attended our branding workshop back in March, and since then have been on a really exciting journey with Chrissie to create her a brand identity that really does her justice and helps her communicate powerfully with her ideal customers.

The Current Brand Identity

I had a real problem with Chrissie’s existing brand identity. I didn’t think it communicated any of Chrissie’s professionalism and expertise for her subject, the cartoonish illustrations felt very down market and the colours clashed terribly.

I also felt quite strongly that there was probably a better strapline that we could come up with than the alusion to another famous company’s strapline. It felt a lot like it was weakening the strength and integrity of the brand.

What we wanted to do with the new identity was to get across the aromatherapy element of Chrissie’s product, whilst at the same time retaining a friendly and approachable feel. And so here are the concepts…

Concept One

We loved the natural, herbal, medicinal feel of this, but Chrissie felt it was a bit too human and not “animal” enough.

Concept Two

Love the cute illustration! Do you see how it’s been used in the final design?

Concept Three

I love how the colours come together on this one – the blue just feels perfectly aromatherapy, nurturing and calming.

I really love this logo. It feels so right for Chrissie and a million miles away from what she had. And by exchanging a cuter guinea pig with the bow I think the identity just works perfectly!

Here’s the final logo

What do you think? And isn’t Chrissie fab for having the passion, focus and confidence to really carve herself out a niche in an area she is such an expert in? Can’t wait to move on to phase two of the project ;-)

Did you pick the right one? Jamie loved the icons of option two and the font and strength of concept four, so we developed the two further and… Ta Da!

compathy final logo

I really like the colour combination and the strength in the font.

Brand Development

Jamie also asked us to develop his brand further for sectors of his business. Inspired by the work we’d done on the last concept, but with a slightly different focus we developed a set of icons – you can see them and the thoughts behind them below.

Jamie also asked us to see whether using a heart in the icon would work and further cement the concept of empathy. I think we both agreed that it didn’t really work – and wasn’t really necessary, so back to square two (above!).

What do you think?

I have been itching to share this identity with you for some time, and it’s only a lack of time that’s stopped me! Jamie Lywood is one of the UK, if not the world’s leading authorities on empathy and it’s link with profit.

In other words, Jamie monitors how large corporates make their customers feel (the empathy) and links that back to their profit and company performance. What Jamie and a host of academics and economists managed to prove was that there is a link between empathy and profit. I’m not even going to try and expand any further at this point (although I may well invite Jamie to guest post – he has some wonderful stories!). Let’s move on to the identity.

Jamie approached us to create an initial brand identity for Compathy – a startup he intends to license around the world. His brief was to create a logo design and brand identity that looked smart, distinctive but that also engaged. Here’s the colour palette and some of our initial brainstorming…

colour psychology palette

Concept One

Very engaging – perhaps a tad too friendly (especially with that loopy font for the tagline). The taglines by the way, were just made up by Caroline, as I blog part two you’ll see that we adapted the taglines to reflect the Jamie’s thinking…

Concept Two

I LOVE concept two – I love the colours, the illustrations and the quirky thinking behind the icons.

Isn’t the typography on that book just delicious? And I loved the thinking behind each of the icons

Concept Three

I really like the presentation of the tagline here.

Bonus: Concept Four

This one is much smarter, sharper – it’s already thinking bigger. But the combination of font and colour mean that it’s not cold. It’s still warm and engaging. It has empathy – which I guess is pretty important in this line of work!

So what do you think? You’ll need to wait until Monday to find out how we developed the logo and which one Jamie chose to take forwards…

By Fiona Humberstone, 28th Mar 2011

Finding a good design agency to work with on your logo design, rebrand or website isn’t easy. Even if we start with the premise that no one sets out to do a bad job (I really believe that’s true), there’s more to finding a good design agency than randomly picking the company that tops the [...]
