Blogging

Blogging isn’t easy is it? You work all day (and sometimes into the night) with the day job and then somehow you’re expected to find the time to blog. And for goodness sake, does it even work? Is it even worth it? You hear horror stores of people putting in dozens of hours a week with nothing to show for it and it becomes scary.

Having blogged for my own business for the last four years I can categorically say that it does work. Blogging has helped me develop relationships with my current and prospective clients, showcase our work and gain recommendations. I’ve also gained countless speaking gigs from the back of it and forged some online friendships along the way. And on top of that, we gain a good chunk of enquiries and clients through the blog. It has certainly become a core part of my marketing mix and something I’d be loathe to do without.

That said, it takes time (that I don’t have) and energy (which as a mum is often in short supply) and determination. There are times when I just don’t think I’ll be able to find the time to blog, and times when I’m so busy that I just need to let it go for a week or two. But you know what? The world doesn’t stop turning just because I don’t blog for a day or two.

After four years I hope I have a healthy attitude to my blog and social media. I know that I’ll get out what I put in. And I love to put in a lot, but not at the expense of my wellbeing. And I think it’s that attitude that really makes a difference.

In preparation for my Blogging Workshop on 22nd September (do join us if you can, there are only a couple of spaces left and it’s always fun) I got thinking about the difference that makes the difference. Here’s my thinking…

The difference that makes a difference

Focus. A great blog with a strong and loyal readership is focused. The author is clear about what they write about, what their focus in and how that feeds through to their business. And if the blog is your business, this still matters (see my case study on Flowerona for more info on how she has turned her blog into a business).

Consistency. Of design, of the frequency of posts, of the tone of voice. I guess it’s about being authentic. Think about your favourite magazine – you buy it because it has reliably consistent content around a theme or a genre. It speaks to you and it inspires and motivates you. It’s the same with a blog.

Design. Blogs that have consistently high readerships are well designed. It’s easy for readers to find their way around, pleasurable to look at and the branding complements the tone of voice.

Generous. With information, with positive energy, with knowledge. We read blogs because we love to learn, we love insights into someone elses’ business of life. Positivity is key and a feeling of “not holding back” information also really matters here.

Passion. Passion is contagious. It keeps people coming back for more, it enthuses them to tell their friends and it helps them engage with you. Passion is one of the key words people use to describe my blog and I think if you look at most successful bloggers you’ll see passion right up there as a key attribute.

Those are my thoughts. How about you? What do you think is the difference that makes the difference in the blogs that you read?

Many of you will know of my fabulous VA and wonderful blogger Rona Wheeldon of Flowerona fame (tweeters may know her as @organisedPA too…). And you may remember my blog a couple of months ago announcing the launch of Rona’s new venture, Flowerona, a blog devoted to her love of flowers.

One of the things I love about Rona is the fact that she never does things by halves. She’s a quiet, methodical and incredibly dilligent worker rather than someone who follows the bull in the china shop approach. And blimey has it paid off.

The difference that made the difference

Rona bothered to think hard about her blog before she launched it. She’s passionate about flowers, a trained florist and loves to write. So a blog related to flowers was a logical step. But the point is that she made sure she had a niche before she started writing. There are plenty of florists who blog. But there isn’t quite anyone doing what Rona does. Tick in the box at step one…

Rona also made sure that she was consistent. She set up regular columns and quickly got into the habit of posting daily. She took her blog seriously enough to invest in a decent design at the outset. And she learned to take gorgeous photos. More ticks in more boxes.

She also spent time working out how to optimise her blog for the search engines. Which meant that the posts she wrote for the Royal Wedding received tens of thousands of hits over a seven day period. Not bad for a blog that’s less than a year old, hey?

As if that wasn’t enough, Rona announced some very exciting news today. As a direct result of her new blog, Rona has herself a new (thankfully part time ;-) ) job – as a columnist for Wedding Flowers magazine. Now that’s what I call a success story.

Congratulations Rona, your story just goes to show how passion, dedication and dilligence really do pay off. Will you join me in wishing her a huge and very well deserved congratulations? And do hop on over to her blog, flowerona, if you haven’t visited yet, it’s full of creative inspiration.

website design

Drum roll please… Over the past couple of months we’ve been working with the utterly lovely and very talented Kathy Ashdown, a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Norfolk. We’ve created a gorgeous new logo and brand identity, beautiful website and engaging blog to help her truly flourish this year.

We’ve had lots and lots of debates over which season Kathy’s business fits into, and we came to the conclusion that it was the Spring side of Summer. And I think this really comes through in the design – classy, muted and delicate colours with a creative and lively twist. Here’s Kathy’s website as it stood as of mid Feb…

And at the top of this post you can see her homepage now. A bit of a transformation some might say? What I love about the “after” is that it’s not just the fact that the design is better. It’s more appropriate, it suits Kathy, communicates her brand values and appeals directly to her ideal clients. You might say it was much more powerful.

As you know, we love working with photographers because they make our lives so easy with their gorgeous images, and Kathy is no different. Above are some shots from her Rock The Frock page. Rob was also evangelising this afternoon about how quickly everything went together – within an hour of showing Kathy how to update her website she had practically populated most of her gallery albums, and let me tell you, there are a LOT of albums! The girl has dedication for her business…

Kathy’s pretty, romantic and quirky photography style is beautifully showcased on her new website and her blog gives her the chance to show off her talents as they happen as well as building strong relationships with her readers. And judging by her first few posts it won’t be long before she gets a firm following on the blog.

Kathy really has been a pleasure to work with: from Ian and I at the briefing stage to Rob, Chloe, Caroline and Stu at the design and build stage, we’ve loved working on this project. I’m a little sad that this part of it is over! But there comes a point where you need to release your work into the big wide world and I know that this is all going to really help Kathy flourish this year.

Yesterday we looked at how e-tailers (people who sell stuff online) should be looking to online bloggers as well as traditional printed media channels to gain exposure, endorsements and traffic to their sites. But how do you do it the right way? And is there a wrong way? Start by doing your homework. Read the [...]

I probably won’t be telling you anything earth shattering when I share the idea that blogging can be great for photographers. Most savvy photographers know that a blog alongside their website is a good thing. But does your blog win you enough business? Or is it more a a time-drain with very little return? Read [...]

Are all blog comments good comments?

By Fiona Humberstone, 18th Nov 2010

Receiving a comment on your blog is wonderful – it reaffirms that someone, somewhere out there is reading your ramblings. And very often it’s the start of a community all centred around your blog. What’s not to like? Well not all comments are good comments. Spammers have become very clever at singling out bloggers, writing [...]
