Would you like a sneak preview of the Flourish video?

By Fiona Humberstone, 20th Sep 2010

You may have noticed that we’re just a little bit excited about our video that we’re having produced at the moment. Alex, the Director, sent me through the first edit last week and I was utterly blown away. They have done a fantastic job of creating a great story about Flourish. The team watched in stunned silence, and despite all of our incredibly high standards, we were all really pleased.

The team are doing the final edit over the next few days and I’m hoping to get it on the website as soon as possible. In the meantime, for those of you that are as impatient as me I thought I’d share a few of my favourite bits with you on the blog. So excuse the slightly self indulgent post today but I know that many of you have been asking how we’re getting on… I hope you like it!

Now there is one massive caveat in me doing that – and that is that I have completely butchered Alex’s beautiful editing in my iMovie. So please don’t take the clips below to be indicative of the editing quality – that’s just my quick and dirty extraction of a few of my favourite things.

A massive thank you to the wonderful Sera Golding and Donna Pourtyemour for saying the lovely things about us that they did. I had no idea what they were going to say, and in fact only found out when I got the video back.

behind the scenes at the flourish design agency videoshoot in guildford

A couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and commissioned a fantastic company to produce a short video for our website. Video is being used more and more on websites now: it literally enables you to bring your company to life and get people engaging with you before they meet you. I hope that our video will give visitors of our site a flavour of who Flourish are and what we’re all about and deliver an even more authentic and inspiring experience than copy alone can.

It’s taken me a long time to find our partners. I’m infamous for my high standards and I had a very clear idea about what I wanted and these guys really gave me confidence that they “got” what I was after and had done that kind of thing before. I’m after something that gives people a taste of Flourish, so I wanted to avoid anything too static. We’re fun, approachable, creative and (hopefully) inspiring, and that was what I wanted to get across in the video.

We did quite a lot of last minute prep – including Izzy arranging some flowers from my garden…

Do you notice that we’ve got rid of that horrible, huge “sample station” that was blocking Izzy’s view of the river and taking up half the front office? Instead we’ve had some amazing bespoke pigeonholes crafted by a local joiner that take up far less room and still enable Izzy to give our clients the print samples they need.

There was also much last minute faffing with labels for the folders (remember my high standards? Poor Rob was designing labels and cutting and sticking right up to the wire) as well as tidying up our desks – mine took a while, I can tell you.

It was scary because I’ve never done anything like this before and also because I had nothing to compare it to. None of our competitors have video on their sites at the moment and I was inspired by very few of the videos I saw on other websites that did have video. I’m sure that in six months time a lot more people will have video, and they’ll be able to learn from our mistakes! But for now I was going in blind. I had a lot of conversations with Alex, our director, who is an ex-music video producer and incredibly cool and good at what he does. Between us we agreed a format for the video and I prepared some questions for the team.

I’ve deliberately kept it unscripted. None of us are actors (with the exception of Caroline who boasts an A-Level drama qualification amongst her many talents) and I just don’t think it would have captured the essence of who we are if we’d scripted things. So instead I prepared some questions which Alex asked each of us.

We also invited in some clients to gush about us and in return kept them going with large wodges of cake and coffee. You’ll also spot the bucks fizz that I gave to each member of the team for breakfast to calm our nerves…

This is the lovely Clare Yarwood White (and her son Caspar exploring my office in the background…)

And here are Matt Pereira and Donna Pouryemour (enjoying a lovely large slice of carrot cake) with Rob, Ian and Caroline in the designer’s studio (Chloe and Izzy are just out of shot…).

I have no idea how it’s going to turn out. I can’t help thinking that I should have invested in a blow-dry for my hair! But hey ho, at least you’ll get the real (unkempt) me. I’m mightily reassured by their attention to detail and vision for the day and we actually all enjoyed it, which we certainly didn’t expect.

As soon as I have the first draft I’ll share it with you… But for now I just wanted to give you a sneak preview of the day.

website design for a chocolate company

Regular blog readers will have been on Sara’s journey from a germ of an idea back in the Spring to a fully fledged business complete with website five months later. You might remember me asking for your help in helping Sara choose a logo (she loved them all and couldn’t decide), we then updated you with the finished logo and stationery before I had the enviable task of having to plan out her site. Naturally I needed to undertake plenty of research whilst planning the site (and probably gained a few pounds in the process…).

Sara offers handmade chocolates for corporate events and weddings as well as (sign me up!) making and tasting parties. The goal was at this stage to provide an information resource, Sara has a young family and didn’t want a shop on the site (at the moment) so we just needed to make it look gorgeous and provide enough information for Sara’s customers to get in touch.

Sara wrote her own copy with a few pointers from me and I love the fact that she’s so effectively communicated her passion for her business and her chocolates.

I love the way Chloe has used imagery to guide people around the site – it makes things so much more interactive. And the photography works really well.

Ooooooh I can hardly contain myself. For weeks I’ve been desperate to show you photographer Matt Tyler’s delicious new website and finally here it is! Good to go. So what do you think? Scrumptious is a word I’d like to use to describe it myself… But being a democracy I’d like to hear your thoughts [...]

You might remember me showing you the logo designs we created for Big Brother winner, media darling and jewellery designer Nadia Almada here. Well Nadia is now safely ensconced in the Big Brother house and I’m delighted to be able to show off her new website. It’s a bit of an emergency site. It was [...]

What difference does a good headshot make anyway?

By Fiona Humberstone, 16th Jul 2010

We’ve been creating a lot of blogs for people recently, and something I must sound like a broken record on in every briefing meeting is my insistance that bloggers work with a {good} photographer to get a professional headshot. I can’t tell you the difference it makes. Actually I don’t need to tell you the [...]

How do you get real people to read your blog?

By Fiona Humberstone, 2nd May 2010

Have you seen Julie and Julia? It’s a heartwarming (read cheesy rom-com if you’re a cynic) tale of a downtrodden woman in a dead-endly depressing job who wants to make something of her life. She’s tired of her over-achieving friends looking down on her career and one day, decides to blog her experience of cooking [...]

I just received this topical email in my inbox from Pizza Express. Not only have they managed to create a great offer that’s making waves virally, they’ve also tied it in to the election without being cheesy or contrived. The email has “gone viral” (ie, people are forwarding it to their friends of their own [...]
