Farewell Woolies

I read somewhere that one of the reasons for Woolworth's demise was the fact that people didn't understand what they sold. I certainly never really understood why I should shop there rather than, say, a newsagent,DIY store or itunes.
Woolworth's failed to communicate their brand effectively. Large or small, you can't afford not to have a clear brand strategy. By this I mean understanding what makes you unique and better than your competitors, and communicating that to your customers and potential customers.
