Hoping that your website will get found by your customers just isn’t enough
Last week I was catching up with a client that we created a new brand and marketing literature for. “So, how’s the website going?” I asked him? “Terrible,” he said. “I haven’t had a single enquiry through the website”. Now that’s not great. His website had been up in cyberspace for 9 months, you’d have hoped it’d be generating at least some business.
We talked about how the client could get his site found through google by adding keywords, a page description and titles, which would ensure that the site got found. So at least people googling would then find the business.
I then asked him about his offline strategy. “What about those postcards we printed for you, have they driven many people to the site?”, “No, not at all” came the reply. Now by this point I really was feeling quite bad about things. “How many have you handed out?” I quizzed. “Barely any” he said “They’re all sat in the back of my car. They’re too smart to hand out”. It was at this point I realised where the issue was, and I don’t think that this is something unique to just this client.
The whole reason for getting leaflets printed, having a website designed is to encourage people to buy from you. Having a website that won’t get found, keeping leaflets/ brochures/ postcards in a cupboard because you’re waiting for someone important to hand them to is not helping you achieve that objective. And it’s not giving you value for money.
So get those leaflets out there! Even if you don’t like them any more, just get rid of them, they might bring you some business. Drop them through doors, post them to people and hand them out at networking events. Whatever it takes to get your message through to your target audience.
And get to work on your search engine optimisation. It really doesn’t have to be rocket science. It’s much easier than you think, and it will bring you more business. If the thought really terrifies you why not sign up for my no nonsense Search Engine Optimisation Made Easy workshop on 8th May.
