Invitation design: essential if you want to create the right atmosphere for your party
By Fiona Humberstone, 8th Apr 2010

I thought I might share a “so bad it’s good” invite that we created for my birthday last year. It’s an absolute crime against typography. but it was necessary you see. We’d planned a 70′s disco themed birthday party. And boy, did the bad fonts and photoshop effects come out in full force! You can see from the images that this was indeed, the party that taste forgot. But as far as creating a great atmosphere was concerned, they did a cracking job! And that’s the point with invitations.
A well designed invitation, whether it’s for a wedding, a children’s birthday party or just a boozy bash, should set the tone, create the atmosphere and give the guests a taste of what’s to come. Really, it’s a case of branding the event. Thinking about the image you want to create with your guests, and making sure it delivers.
The fab, groovy font, the sparkles (and what you can’t see: the starmarque stars all over the page) and the glitterballs create a fun, disco vibe. Ok, so it’s not the classiest invite, but that wasn’t the point really…
In this case, the brief was to create a fab, fun party invite that created a sense of fun and anticipation. And we think it’s delivered in spades. How about you?
