Isn’t it interesting how we all find our inspiration in different places? For me, immersing myself in a room full of supportive creative energy and being encouraged to play with colour, photography and styling is completely energising. So when Holly Becker and Leslie Shewring announced their workshops in New York I ummed and aaahed and thought “what the heck, I’ll do it”. And I did!
Within just ten days of booking my place and flights I was on a plane to New York.
The class was phenomenal. From the moment I walked in and took in the beautifully styled studio – complete with flowers, liberty print and flouro (that’s neon to you and me Brits) crepe paper hangings. To my (internal) squeals of delight as I saw our presents on the desk: a French General Vingage Notions book and a Rifle notebook. The day was jam packed with some really fun tasks as well as some truly insightful tips on how to style and photograph better. And with my branding book inching closer every day I know I’m going to be able to put a lot of that into very good use.
Both Holly and Leslie were as passionate as inspirational as I’d thought they might be. And for the whole day we were immersed in creativity and colour. Leslie’s generosity with her knowledge on how she puts together her beautiful colour palettes and her tips on how to style was wonderful. And her encouragement to use our cameras on manual was (at first) terrifying but I think I’m finally starting to get it get it! Holly’s creative passion, business brain and sheer brilliance was also an inspiration: and proof that you don’t need to sell out and ditch creativity to be a success.
The room was full of women with a shared passion: creativity, and that made for a lot of fun. We were all at different stages with our businesses and knowledge, and that just made it even more fun. I hope to stay in touch with a lot of them. They were so generous with their knowledge and so passionate about what they did.
It was a bit nuts to fly to New York just for this class, but having worked back through my notes I can honestly say it was worth it. I made some wonderful connections, have a bunch of notes that I can’t wait to implement and I’m on a real creative high. You’re going to start to see a few of the ideas I gleaned implemented over the next few weeks, starting with… Getting The Whole Team Blogging… Look out for snippets of what we’re up to, what inspires us and the inside track on some of our creative process. Whoop!
